Groucho Marx, a famous comedian and actor, had a complex and difficult later life. He had strained relationships with his son and daughter from his first marriage and a complicated relationship with his third daughter from his second marriage.

In 1974, Erin Fleming, who was Groucho's secretary-manager, was appointed his guardian and conservator of his estate worth between $2 million and $4 million.

Later, Groucho tried to adopt her, but a psychologist declared him not mentally competent to do so.

There were accusations of elder abuse against Fleming and legal battles over Groucho's money and possessions after his death.

The legal disputes were eventually resolved in favour of Groucho's children, and Fleming was ordered to pay $472,000. She suffered from mental health issues and died by suicide in 2003.

To avoid a similar outcome, it is recommended to get expert legal and medical advice on estate planning and the creation of a living will to clearly state one's wishes regarding assets and end-of-life issues.
