What Is a Power of Attorney

Besides entertainment law, our services include commercial and corporate advice, where we collaborate with you to identify any legal risk you may face and work to reduce your potential liability. We also assist with Power of Attorney, a product for which there isn’t much public knowledge, so let’s look at what is a Power of Attorney.

Authority to Act on Your Behalf

A Power of Attorney (POA) is where you (the principal) permit in writing to someone (the agent) to decide on your property, finances, and investments. Therefore, you must trust the person/ legal entity you choose to handle such affairs for you. This becomes necessary if you fall ill temporarily and permanently and can’t sign documents.

A POA is no longer binding if you cancel it, die, a court rules against it, or the agent can't carry out the functions documented in the POA.

Types of Power of Attorney

The different types of POAs include a durable POA that only comes into effect when the principal can’t do certain things for medical reasons. Although this type of POA allows the agent to pay medical bills, it can’t decide on health-related matters such as whether to undergo a specific procedure.

On the other hand, a limited POA only gives the agent certain powers where, for example, they can only act on financial matters. For example, you may only allow the agent to sign off on the principal’s retirement accounts.
